Top Dog Breeds For Allergy Sufferers

Aug 10, 2016 | Dogs

Nothing is more heartbreaking to animal lovers than finding out they’re allergic to dogs. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of dog breeds that fall into the category known as “hypoallergenic”.

While no dog is 100% allergen-free, these breeds produce significantly less of the allergens that people react to, such as dander. What’s really great about hypoallergenic dogs is that they come in every shape and size, meaning that there is there is something for everyone. Just take a look at these 10 hypoallergenic breeds and see for yourself!

BICHON FRISE

These little white fluff balls are known for their gentle and playful personalities. Their small size and medium energy levels make them a great addition to any family, however, prospective owners need to be ready for the grooming requirements their coats require.

SCHNAUZER

Schnauzers come in three different sizes, Giant, Standard, and Miniature, each with their own unique personality. One thing that each dog has in common, however, is a keen mind and ease of training. Smart and obedient, Schnauzers make a great addition to any family who feels that they can keep up with their medium to high energy levels.

IRISH WATER SPANIEL

These water-loving dogs are as playful as they are hard working. Full of energy, the Irish Water Spaniel is best suited for families with an active lifestyle that can keep the dog mentally and physically stimulated. It’s also important to keep in mind that their waterproof coats require regular grooming to avoid matting.

CHINESE CRESTED HAIRLESS

These little dogs are easily recognized by their distinct coats, or should we say lack thereof. What they lack in fur, however, they make up for in their lively and affectionate personality. While their grooming requirements are minimal, any exposed skin on these dogs will be sun protection when outside.

MALTESE

These pups may be small, but they are known for their bravery. When these fearless little dogs aren’t protecting their family from any perceived danger, they are the definition of a lap dog. That doesn’t mean they don’t need regular daily exercise, though!

POODLE

Available in three different sizes, standard, miniature, and toy, poodles are known for their high intelligence. While their intelligence makes them easy to train, it does mean that families need to ensure that they have plenty of mental stimulation or they can become descriptive due to boredom. Further, their coats require regular professional grooming.

PORTUGUESE WATER DOG

These presidential pups have been making a name for themselves in the Whitehouse in recent years and for good reason. Portuguese Water Dogs are both adventurous and athletic, making them perfect for active families who enjoy spending time in and around the water. However, their waterproof coats do require regular grooming to keep them looking their best.

SOFT COATED WHEATON TERRIER

The Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier is a great medium-sized dog with a friendly personality, but what really makes them stand out is their deep devotion to their owners. However, this devotion does come with a side of stubbornness so they do best with an owner that has experience with terriers or other strong-willed dogs. Their beautiful coats shed minimally, but do require regular grooming.

KERRY BLUE TERRIER

The Kerry Blue Terrier is a smart little dog who enjoys nothing more than being around people. Their medium size and energy levels, paired with the enjoyment they get from being around humans, make them a great addition to any family.

COTON DE TULEAR

The Coton de Tulear is known for their happy-go-lucky personality and their love of children. These little dogs enjoy getting their exercise in any way that allows them to spend time with their favourite humans. If loyalty is a primary trait you look for in a dog, the Coton de Tulear might just be the breed for you.
